What isLANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE'Landscape is not only a physical phenomenon. but also a cultural schema, a conceptual filter through which our realtionships to wildness and nature can be understood. '
-----James Corner, 1991 'Landscape architecture creates or preserves settings for human activities that engage mind and touch the heart, while allowing the original environment, built and natural, to sustain. Landscape architects create social responsible landscapes which combine function with aesthetics.' -------Peter Miniutti, Associate Professor, UConn LA |
Sustainable Urban Morphology Research
Cities, as human settlements, are the manifestation of humans' interaction with the natural environment. Urban morphology, thus, is the study of human settlements, their structure, physical configuration and transformation. The urgent need to pursue sustainable urban development today sheds a light on the physical configurations of urban form that could achieve the most environmental, social and economic sustainability. From a social sustainability stand point, I study on different populations' inequal access to green public spaces in cities and how to mitigate this issue by utilizing the vacant lots. From an environmental sustainability perspective, the development of cities should respect ecosystem health and biodiversity. I also study, as a landscape architect, how future land planning could minimize the impact of development on natural ecosystems, especially the ecological connectivity, and maximize ecological services.
Primary Research Areas:
Sustainable Urban Morphology and spatial analysis
Applied Urban Ecology and Landscape Planning
Vacant land as social-ecological systems

Design Projects
Pan has learned Landscape Architecture for more than 5 years and involved with different scales and different types of landscape design projects during her study. Her projects are located from China to United States and focused on historical park rehabilitation, civic park design, blight neighborhood revitalization, campus design, climate-change adaptation design, as well as community planning.
EXPERIENCE
Pan always believes that scientific curiosity should come from daily life, and scientifc process should be problem-solving powerhouse for the real-world issues. Interested in urban form research, she travelled worldwide and observed how urban form is influenced and infulences citizens' life, and how urban form accommondates its natural environment.
